As members of the Physical Activity for Health Collaborative (PAHC) and the BC Alliance for Healthy Living (BCAHL), BCRPA is excited to share the news of the much anticipated EverybodyMoves Resource Hub!
The Hub is a one-stop shop for recreation and sport leaders who want to ensure physical activity is as inclusive and accessible as possible. The general public will also find many valuable resources about active living and disabilities, and why inclusion matters. The Hub is a project of the PAHC.
Physical activity refers to all movement, which can include walking, cycling, wheeling, sports, and play. Regular physical activity can help prevent hypertension, maintain healthy body weight, and improve overall quality of life.
Physical activity is vital for one’s health, and yet we know many British Columbians face visible and invisible barriers to regular activity. For example, nearly half of adults with disabilities don’t get any aerobic physical activity, and people identifying as lesbian, gay and bisexual of all ages are less likely to participate in sports. In 2020 it was reported that 60% of Canadian children and youth did not meet physical activity guidelines.
The consequences for not being physically active are serious. People who don’t engage in physical activity are more likely to have increased mental and emotional health issues, decreased immune function and inflammation, and are more at risk for developing chronic illnesses.
BC clearly needs solutions to get us all active, and the EverybodyMoves Resource Hub is part of the answer!
EverybodyMoves Hub is a place for front-line staff, programmers, trainers, coaches and organizational leaders to find practical, useful resources and examples on how to make physical activity more inclusive for more of the community. From facilities to program design to signage, marketing and policy development, the goal is to make sure the EverybodyMoves Hub will have a resource that covers it.
The Hub collects and stores information from evidence-based relevant sources on an ongoing basis. Here, you can find a variety of inclusion and accessibility resources such as:
- The City of Vancouver’s checklist to ensure your organization hosts accessible events
- Modifications and adaptations of games for youth with disabilities
- The equity and inclusion snapshot for Aboriginal, First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people
- Ways to cultivate gender diverse leadership in sports
- A safe exercise and education program for older adults experiencing physical health issues
After using the search tool, participate in a quick survey to tell us about your experience with EverybodyMoves, and you can enter a draw for a $50 Visa gift card!
