Learn to create inclusive environments for underrepresented youth.

viaSport is a BC organization working in collaboration with the sport community to advance high-quality sport experiences that make sport better. Their work envisions a society where people and communities are truly healthy, vibrant and connected because they value and participate in sport experiences that are safe, inclusive and meaningful.

Supported by the Ministry of Health and the B.C. Alliance for Healthy Living, viaSport’s All Youth Matter training was piloted in 2019 after three years of research and consultation that included:

  • nearly 250 youth across the province who face barriers to participation,
  • over 100 leaders from multiple sectors who excel at serving youth every day, and
  • nearly 500 recreation staff through the generous support of the British Columbia Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA).

The result was training developed to include the perspectives and experiences of youth facing barriers across BC, along with the expertise of ‘inclusion experts’ that best serve them. It is designed to provide value to leaders at all levels, from executives to front-line staff.

While learning outcomes are standardized, within viaSport’s All Youth Matters training, there is flexibility to tailor discussion and place more emphasis on certain sections of the training over others. Understanding the expectations and starting point of learners is critical to maximizing learning and impact.

Through interactive learning and real-life scenarios, the All Youth Matters training teaches best practices to support youth inclusion from equity-deserving populations.

Whether attending a training directly, hosting, or co-hosting a session with another facility or organization, All Youth Matter can equip communities and organizations with the skills and knowledge needed to create inclusive environments for underrepresented youth.

Learning outcomes from the training:

  • Define “Inclusion” & conditions that contribute to underrepresentation
  • Recognize unconscious bias
  • Understand and apply a framework that supports inclusion
  • Identify barriers and strategies to mitigate them
  • Identify strategies to stop exclusion or discrimination
  • Create an action plan to foster positive environments for equity-deserving populations
  • Identify strategies to enroll supporters to take action & resources to support
